Streets With Stories:

A Snapshot into Origins of Some of Sioux Fall's Most Iconic Roads

"In .3miles, turn left onto Ladyslipper Circle"....Yes that is the name of a real street, right here in Sioux Falls.

Have you ever wondered how city streets get their names?
I mean, yeah, there is the basic first avenue, or second street, but what about Leprechaun Drive, or Louise Avenue?

Official records on the naming of streets are not maintained, in fact, most streets were named by the original landowners and developers, however there is some public information about a few of the most iconic streets in Sioux Falls.

1 ) Waltz Avenue

Cyrus and Mary Walts were highly involved in the Sioux Falls community in the late 1870s. The couple were dedicated to education, Cyrus served in a wide range of noble duties, the highest being City Justice. Mary, the first public school teacher in Sioux Falls.

2) Veterans Parkway

The road known as, "Veterans Parkway" since 2015, used to be iconically called "Powder House Road". In 1936, one of the most horrendous murders took place when a wanted thief killed his accomplice. To cover up the evidence, criminal William Nesbit executed literal overkill with 3,500 lbs of dynamite and 7,000 lbs of gun powder, creating an explosion that broke windows all over the city.

3) Phillips Avenue

Dr. Josiah and Hattie Phillips were a pushing force in the development of present day downtown Sioux Falls. Dr. Josiah was a military surgeon who turned to real estate after eyesight failure, and his wife, Hattie Phillips started the first Sunday school, as well as built the Phillips Hotel, the largest hotel in Sioux Falls at that time.

What Do You Think Is The Strangest Street Name In Sioux Falls? I'll await your answer here.
